The National Alliance to impact the Social Determinants of Health Releases White Paper Defining their Action Plan to Address the Broad Underlying Inputs to Health
Washington, D.C., September 11, 2018 – The National Alliance to impact the Social Determinants of Health (NASDOH), a group of stakeholders working to systematically and pragmatically build a common understanding of the importance of addressing social needs as part of an overall approach to health improvement, has released a new white paper providing insights in to their action plan to systematically create a supportive policy environment to address social determinants of health. The paper introduces NASDOH’s plans to bring clarity to the current understanding of the issues, challenges, and opportunities for the health care system to address social determinants in concert with communities and the public and private sector.
NASDOH unites industry-wide experts who are actively breaking down the silos historically seen between health care, business, public health, tech, and the public sector. NASDOH’s mission is to make a material improvement in the health of individuals and communities and, through multi-sector partnerships within the national system of health, advance holistic, value-based, person-centered health care that can successfully impact the social determinants of health.
“Achieving optimal health and well-being for all requires more than clinical excellence. It will require public-private sector partnerships that can drive action to address all the determinants of health,” said Karen DeSalvo, MD, NASDOH Co-Convener.
NASDOH encourages public and private sector leaders to support progress by promoting collaboration and innovation around social determinants of health interventions in five areas of focus:
- Promoting a supportive policy environment at all levels of government and in the private sector
- Framing the issue in a way that promotes action
- Elevating shared learnings across communities
- Leveraging shared approaches to measurement and evaluation
- Encouraging data and technology innovation
“I believe this group is uniquely qualified to empower individuals and communities to make real progress to impact the social determinants of health and help us achieve value-based health care for all Americans,” said Governor Mike Leavitt, NASDOH Co-Convener and Founder of Leavitt Partners.
The white paper can be viewed on the newly-launched NASDOH website here.
NASDOH brings together health care, public health and social services expertise, local community experience, community-convening competence, business and financial insight, technology innovation, data and analytics competencies, and policy and advocacy acumen to assess and address current regulatory frameworks, funding environments and opportunities, and practical challenges to implementing and sustaining social determinants of health efforts. We provide a bridge between sectoral efforts by engaging organizations across the national system of health and in particular, engaging the business sector to articulate the cross-sector value proposition for addressing the social determinants of health.
