Joel Ario is a member of Leavitt Partners’ FuturePanel. He brings to the firm 30 years of experience in a professional career dedicated to shaping and implementing public policy, primarily in the areas of health reform and consumer rights.
Mr. Ario recently joined Manatt Health Solutions as a Managing Director after serving 13 months as Director of the Office of Insurance Exchanges at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). Prior to his federal service, Mr. Ario was Pennsylvania Insurance Commissioner, with responsibility for overseeing the state’s $85 billion insurance industry. Mr. Ario also served as Oregon Insurance Administrator for seven years and was elected three times by his fellow commissioners to serve as an officer in the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC). He served on the NAIC executive committee from 2001 to 2010.
Mr. Ario came to state insurance regulation in 1994 with a 13-year history of championing consumer rights with the Public Interest Research Groups (PIRGs), a network of state-based research and advocacy organizations. Mr. Ario was Executive Director of the Oregon PIRG from 1987 to 1994, and founded the Wisconsin PIRG in 1986.
Mr. Ario received his bachelor’s degree from St. Olaf College, a master’s degree from Harvard Divinity School and a law degree from Harvard Law School.
