Dr. David Blumenthal

David Blumenthal, MD, MPP, is the former National Coordinator for Health Information Technology under President Barack Obama. In this role he oversaw national efforts to create an interoperable, private, and secure nationwide health information system and to support widespread, meaningful use of health IT.

Currently a professor of medicine and health care policy at the Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School, Dr. Blumenthal shares his talent as a renowned health services researcher and authority on health IT adoption. He is the author of nearly 250 scholarly publications, including the book, Heart of Power: Health and Politics in the Oval Office, which tells the history of presidential involvement in health reform in the United States.

He is a member of the Institute of Medicine and has held numerous leadership positions in medicine, government, and academia. Dr. Blumenthal was a correspondent for the New England Journal of Medicine and a member of the journal’s editorial board.

Dr. Blumenthal received his undergraduate, medical, and public policy degrees from Harvard University and completed his residency in internal medicine at Massachusetts General Hospital.
