Health Care
Our Vision:
Though there is much to be proud of in American health care, our society is increasingly recognizing an alarming lack of organization and alignment that pervades our health care infrastructure and delivery. Our health care “system” isn’t really a system at all. Information doesn’t move with patients, quality and cost information is far from transparent, and stakeholder incentives often run contrary to achieving real value. It is not unreasonable to categorize this dysfunction and its accompanying cost escalation as the most serious economic threat facing our nation in the coming decade.
Fortunately, this is a problem that we CAN solve, though it will take concerted, collaborative efforts in four key areas:
1. Health IT – We must evolve our inefficient, paper-based medical records to an electronic interoperable system
2. Quality transparency – We must measure and publish useful, objective information regarding the quality of care provided to patients
3. Cost transparency – We must measure and publish useful information on health care costs, including information on episode-based costs that enable comparisons and reward innovation
4. Incentives – We must use incentives to refocus all health care stakeholders on value as the principal virtue of our system
The realization of these objectives will lead to a true health care system that efficiently and appropriately delivers the greatest health care in the world.
