Regarding: Passing of Senator Ted Kennedy
Republican friends of mine are sometimes surprised when I tell them Senator Ted Kennedy was one of the people I enjoyed working with most in Washington D.C. Our most poignant interactions came while he was ill. During that time we were working closely on renewing the waivers necessary for the Massachusetts health insurance plan. On several occasions, despite his illness, he called to offer help and support. It always lifted my spirits.
Another memorable day was spent in New Bedford, Massachusetts at the superfund site. During my confirmation as head of the EPA, Senator Kennedy asked if I would visit the site. I committed to do so on the condition he would come with me. It turned out to be one of my favorite days as head of EPA. I got a chance to see first hand the affectionate relationship of Ted Kennedy and the people of Massachusetts. They loved him and he loved them. That day we talked to innkeepers, boats-man and local officials. They embraced him and he spoke in ways that helped them know he cared about their plight.
The obvious differences in our ideology were evident, but we shared a love of our country and people. I mourn his passing.
